FAQ

How do I find out my/my partner's ring size?

  • The easiest and most accurate way to determine ring size is by visiting our store and letting one of our sales associates size your partner's finger. We can save the measurements in their customer profile for the future. If you'd like to find out your partner's ring size without them knowing, we always suggest that you bring in a ring that they wear on their ring finger, and we can measure its size. If neither of those is a viable option, no need to worry...Roman Jewelers offers one free sizing with your engagement ring purchase, so we'll help you make an educated guess and adjust the ring to the correct size after the proposal.

Can I customize an engagement ring I see on your site?

  • Any of the engagement rings on our website can be customized to your preferences! Whether you just need a different size or want to change something about the design of the ring, we would be happy to assist you in creating your dream engagement ring. Some couples want to create a one-of-a-kind ring from scratch. As experienced customer designers we can do that, too. Please contact us to discuss your preferences.

How are natural diamonds formed?

  • Diamonds are formed deep below the Earth’s surface through a combination of high pressure and temperature over millions to billions of years. Carbon atoms are bonded together in a tetrahedral structure that makes the resulting diamond incredibly hard and creates the fascinating optical properties that diamonds are beloved for! The rough diamonds make their way closer to Earth’s surface via eruptions where we can find and mine them. Mining diamonds has become more sophisticated than finding loose rough diamonds at a river’s edge, and the Kimberly Process ensures that all diamonds we use and sell are ethically sourced. How are lab-grown diamonds made?

  • Lab-grown diamonds are created through two distinct processes: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT). During CVD, a “seed” diamond is placed in a chamber filled with a hydrocarbon gas mixture which is heated with a microwave beam and causes the carbon atoms from the gas to diffuse onto the seed plate and crystallize over a period of weeks. The HPHT process uses high pressure and temperature to mimic the natural process that forms diamonds below the surface of the earth. A core of carbon starter material, such as graphite mixed with other elements, and a “seed” diamond is placed into a machine that heats the material to 1300-1600°C and applies pressure above 870,000 PSI. The carbon atoms precipitate onto the diamond seed over a period of a few days to weeks and form an octahedral diamond crystal. Make an appointment with us to find your perfect diamond.

What is the difference between a natural and a lab-grown diamond?

  • Natural and lab-grown diamonds both have the same chemical composition and makeup. The difference is the way that the diamonds are formed and, therefore, the rarity. While natural diamonds take millions of years to form under the earth’s surface, lab-grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks using advanced technology. Because natural diamonds are inherently rare and lab-grown diamonds can be grown on demand, the value of lab-grown diamonds is significantly less than equivalent natural diamonds.

Can you tell the difference between a natural and lab-grown diamond?

  • Most people are unable to tell the difference between a natural and lab-grown diamond, though a trained gemologist may be able to distinguish between them due to inclusions that are unique to each growing process. There are also scopes, such as the GIA iD100®, which we have here at the store, that can read lattice defects in the stone to accurately determine whether a diamond is natural.

What are the 4 C’s?

  • Diamonds are each unique and “the 4 C’s” is a way to compare and evaluate their characteristics. The 4 C’s are Carat weight, Color, Clarity, and Cut.
Carat weight is simply how much a diamond weighs. Typically, this indicates how large a stone appears, but depending on the shape and cut, the actual dimensions can vary. For example, two oval cut diamonds both weighing 1.50 carats may look slightly different in size because of the dimensions of the stone.
Color is how much or little color is seen in the stone, graded from letter D, which means the stone shows no color, to Z, which is stones that appear light yellow or brown.
Clarity is the amount and visibility of inclusions within the stone. A heavily included stone can appear far less bright than a slightly included one, since the inclusions can block the light from reflecting and refracting.
Cut refers to not only the overall shape of the diamond, but also the quality of the cutting and polishing job that finished your stone. A well-cut diamond will display more brilliance than a poorly cut one. Cut is an important factor in how your diamond will look!
